Effective September 7, 2026
LatenSea is a language-learning app. This policy describes what data the app handles and why. We collect the minimum needed to run the service, and we do not sell data or show ads.
Account: your email address (from email sign-up, or from Google / Apple sign-in — with Apple you may hide your email and we receive a relay address instead). It identifies your account and is never used for marketing. If you use LatenSea without an account, we create an anonymous account for you and store a random, app-generated installation identifier (hashed) so that the same device gets the same anonymous account back. It is not the advertising identifier, is never shared, and is deleted with the account.
Learning content you create: translations you ask for, conversation messages, saved words and images, flashcard decks, reading sessions, and live exchange messages. These are stored so your library syncs across your devices.
Photos you choose: when you use the reader or sign reader you pick or take a photo; it is sent for text extraction and (if you ask) image generation, and is not retained after processing unless you save the result.
Speech: when you tap the microphone, the recording is sent to our server and transcribed by OpenAI's speech-to-text API; the audio is discarded after transcription and only the text is kept if you send or save it. Spoken playback (lesson voices) is generated by OpenAI text-to-speech from the lesson text and cached; no personal data is in those requests.
Usage records: a credit ledger of the AI actions you run (kept up to 180 days) to meter usage fairly.
Text and images you submit for translation, conversation, stories, reading, sign reading, or image generation are processed by OpenAI (OpenAI, L.L.C.) via its API (text models, image generation, speech-to-text and text-to-speech), solely to produce the result you requested. Per OpenAI's API terms, API data is not used to train their models. The app asks for your explicit consent before the first AI request, and you can withdraw consent at any time in Account → AI processing — the AI features then stop sending data.
No advertising, no tracking across other apps or websites, no sale of data, no third-party analytics, no cookies or web trackers on these pages. Payments, if you subscribe, are handled entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play); we receive only a purchase receipt to unlock your plan and never see your payment details.
Data is stored on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States, encrypted in transit and at rest. Sign-in is handled by AWS Cognito.
In the app: Account → Delete account. This permanently removes your account, your library, saved conversations, images and usage records. You can also email josiahkila@gmail.com to request deletion.
Wherever you live — including under the GDPR/UK GDPR and the CCPA/CPRA — you may request a copy of your data, correction, deletion, or restriction of processing at any time via josiahkila@gmail.com. We answer within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal data for advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. Our legal basis for processing is the contract with you (providing the app) and your consent for AI processing, which you can withdraw in Account → AI processing. If you are in the EU/UK you may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
LatenSea is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
We will update this page and its effective date when the policy changes.
